Dishwasher Error Codes

Dishwasher Won't Start

Pressing Start and getting nothing — no hum, no lights, no fill sound — usually isn't a mystery. It's almost always one of a small handful of things: power, the door, a stuck button, or a control board that's already locked itself out.

What this looks like

The most complete version of this symptom is total silence: no lights, no display, nothing at all when you press any button, which points toward power rather than the dishwasher's internal logic. A step down from that is a dishwasher with lights on and a display active, but pressing Start does nothing — no fill, no motor sound, sometimes an immediate beep of rejection. A third version is a dishwasher that appears to accept the Start press, runs for a second, then stops, which usually means it began the cycle and then immediately hit a fault rather than failing to start at all.

Most likely causes, ranked

  1. The door isn't closing and latching within the expected window. Most models require the door to be securely latched, and on some, closed within a few seconds of the Start press — see the door latch page for the full breakdown.
  2. No power reaching the unit. A tripped breaker, an unseated plug on plug-in models, or a blown fuse feeding the circuit will produce total silence.
  3. A physically stuck or sticky button on the control panel, which some brands report as its own distinct fault rather than a simple non-response.
  4. A control lock or child lock engaged on the panel, which will make every button press appear to do nothing.
  5. A control board or user-interface fault that has put the unit into a halted state, requiring a full power reset to clear.

Which error codes this can show as

Bosch, Samsung, and LG don't have a documented code in this dataset specifically for "won't start" as distinct from the door-latch and control-fault codes above — on those brands, a unit that won't start is more often signaled by a blinking light than a lettered code, or the cause is simply the door not being latched. See blinking lights with no error code if that matches what you're seeing.

What you can check yourself

  1. Confirm the dishwasher has power: check the breaker, or for plug-in models, that the plug is fully seated
  2. Close the door firmly and try pressing Start again within a couple of seconds
  3. Press and release each button on the control panel firmly to check whether one is physically sticking, and wipe down the panel to clear any sticky residue
  4. Look for a control-lock or child-lock indicator and hold the lock button (often 3 seconds) to release it if engaged
  5. For plug-in models, unplug for 30 seconds and plug back in; for hard-wired units, flip the breaker off for 30 seconds, then restore power and try a new cycle

Call a professional when

If power is confirmed present, the door latches normally, no button is stuck, and a full power reset still doesn't get a cycle to start, the control board or user-interface assembly likely needs professional diagnosis and replacement.
