Whirlpool F5E1: Door Latch Switch Fault
Medium severity
Start gets pressed on a Whirlpool dishwasher and nothing happens, because F5E1 means the control board can't confirm the door is actually closed and latched.
Applies to: Whirlpool dishwashers with electronic controls and an electronic door latch switch.
What it means
This is a safety interlock doing exactly what it's designed to do: before the dishwasher will let water into the tub, it needs the door switch to confirm the door is closed and the latch has caught. F5E1 appears when that confirmation never arrives — either the door genuinely isn't closed, or the switch and latch hardware that's supposed to report "closed" back to the board has a problem of its own.
Common causes
The list runs from completely harmless to a hardware repair:
- The door wasn't closed within a few seconds of pressing Start/Resume
- Something (a dish towel, packaging, misaligned rack) is blocking the door from fully closing
- A worn, misaligned, or broken door latch assembly
- A damaged or disconnected door switch wire
What you can check yourself
Rule out timing and obstructions first, since those account for a large share of F5E1 codes:
- Close the door firmly within a few seconds of pressing Start/Resume
- Check for anything blocking the door from closing completely, including an overloaded top rack
- Open and close the door a few times to see if the latch catches properly, and visually inspect the latch mechanism for damage
- Power-cycle the unit at the breaker or outlet before trying again
If the door swings shut with a solid, audible click every time and the fault still won't clear, that's a sign the problem lives inside the latch or its wiring rather than in how the door is being closed.
Call a professional when
If the door closes normally but the fault persists, the door latch assembly or its switch/wiring is likely defective and needs professional replacement.
