Whirlpool F7E1: Heating Element Fault

Dishes come out of a Whirlpool dishwasher lukewarm and un-dried, and F7E1 on the display means the control board isn't seeing the heater circuit respond the way it should.

What it means
Hot water and heated dry both depend on the same in-tub heating element, and the control board monitors that circuit during a cycle to confirm it's actually drawing power and producing heat. F7E1 means that expected response isn't showing up — the water isn't reaching temperature on schedule, or the dry phase isn't heating at all, which points to either the element itself, the wiring feeding it, or the relay that switches it on.
Common causes
The fault narrows down to one of three places along the heater circuit:
- A burned-out or damaged heating element
- Mineral scale buildup on the element from hard water
- Wiring or relay issues in the heater circuit
What you can check yourself
There isn't much here that's safe to do beyond a reset and a descale, and that's by design given what's involved:
- Power-cycle the dishwasher at the breaker and run a short cycle to confirm the fault isn't a one-off
- Descale the interior with a dishwasher-safe descaler if you have hard water
Heavy scale acts like insulation on the element, making it work harder and fail sooner, so a descale is worth doing even if it doesn't clear this particular code.
