KitchenAid H2O Error Code: Dishwasher Not Filling
Medium severity
Unlike KitchenAid's blinking F#E# fault codes, H2O spells itself out in plain text on models with a text display, and it means exactly what it looks like: the dishwasher isn't sensing any water coming in.
Applies to: KitchenAid dishwashers with electronic controls that display text codes.
What it means
The dishwasher is not detecting water entering the unit during the fill portion of the cycle.
Every cycle opens with a fill phase, and the control board expects to see the water level rise, or the flow meter register a matching pulse count, within a set window after it opens the inlet valve. H2O appears when that expected fill simply never registers — in a sense the mirror image of a long-drain fault at the other end of a cycle, except here the trouble sits at the very front of the supply chain: the shutoff valve under the sink, the hose running to the unit, and the inlet valve itself, all before water ever reaches the tub.
Common causes
H2O narrows down to a short list of places water flow can stop before it ever reaches the tub:
- Water supply valve under the sink not fully open
- A kinked or blocked water supply hose
- Low household water pressure
- A clogged inlet valve filter screen or a failed inlet valve
What you can check yourself
The self-service list stays short and sequential here, and importantly it doesn't require restarting the whole cycle once the cause is fixed:
- Verify the water supply valve at the dishwasher connection is turned on
- Inspect the water supply hose for kinks or blockages restricting flow
- Once the supply issue is corrected, press Start to let the dishwasher refill and resume its cycle
That last step matters more than it looks: because H2O interrupts the cycle rather than canceling it outright, correcting the water supply and pressing Start resumes the wash where it left off instead of forcing a full restart from the beginning. It's one of the few KitchenAid fault codes where the fix, when it really is this simple, doesn't cost you the whole cycle.
Call a professional when
If water supply and the hose both check out fine and H2O keeps appearing, the water inlet valve likely needs professional testing and replacement.
