Bosch E25: Drain Pump Blocked or Cover Loose

Medium severity

E25 means the drain pump either has something physically jammed in its impeller or its cover isn't seated correctly, so it can't move water even while running.

You might actually hear the pump straining or buzzing near the end of a cycle while the tub stays full, or the machine may go quiet and simply leave standing water behind. Either way, E25 on the display points straight at the pump area under the filter rather than anywhere further upstream.

Applies to: Bosch dishwashers with electronic displays (most 300/500/800 series models).

What it means

The drain pump is blocked or its cover isn't seated properly, so the pump can't move water out of the tub even though it's running.

Bosch's drain pump impeller spins fast enough that a stray shard of glass, a fruit pit, or a broken bit of packaging can wedge it solid, and the control board reads that stall as E25 within a cycle or two.

Common causes

Nearly every case comes down to one of three things sitting between the filter and the pump itself:

What you can check yourself

With the unit unplugged or the breaker off first, this is a hands-in-the-sump job:

  1. Remove the bottom filter assembly to expose the drain pump area
  2. Remove the drain pump cover and clear out any standing water and visible debris by hand
  3. Check for hard objects (glass, bones, plastic bits) stuck in the pump impeller and remove them carefully
  4. Reinstall the pump cover, making sure it clicks or locks fully into place
  5. Run a short cycle to confirm the code has cleared

Call a professional when

If you can't locate or clear a blockage yourself, or the impeller itself looks cracked or seized, the drain pump likely needs professional replacement.
